We have been working in the town for the last 6 months, getting to know the local community and organisations that make it tick, and listening to the hopes and concerns of a wide range of people. We have previously asked for your opinions about the town as it is today and have been delighted with the response we have had from local residents.

We have now developed draft proposals for the long term regeneration of the town centre. The strategy will form the basis for the long term development of the town centre, over the next 10-20 years. It identifies the main locations, general layout and character of development proposed, but not detailed designs. These can be viewed on the Latest News page of this site.

By the end of May we hope to have completed the consultation on these draft proposals and at the same time will be talking to landowners, developers, and local organisations. The final stage of the project involves looking at the practical issues of how best to make these proposals a reality: who will be responsible for driving them forward; where the money will come from to pay for key projects; what technical problems may exist, etc.

These proposals will then be adopted by Copeland Borough Council as the basis for planning decisions within the town centre over the next decade and will be used as a means of attracting new investment into the town. This process will entail further consultation with local communities and it is important that local people are informed and involved at every stage of the process.
