Whitehaven Town Centre Development Strategy

The main aims of the Development Strategy are to attract new investment to the town centre and to make it a more dynamic, interesting and attractive place to live, work and visit. The proposals are grouped into four main ‘clusters’:

1. Bransty Gate
This will become the new ‘leisure and cultural’ quarter for the town, and a high quality gateway to the town centre. A number of developments including a transport interchange, hotel, restaurant, workshops and exhibition space will be arranged around a new public square.

2. Old Baths Square
A new public space with the converted Old Baths building at its heart, creating a new link between the town centre and harbour. New office and residential buildings on either side will provide café/bar or retail opportunities at ground floor level to enliven the space.

3. The Village
A mixed residential and shopping area to consolidate the ‘retail quarter’ of the town on the site of the original medieval fishing village. New large scale and small specialist shops will be grouped around a new public space and will provide a new focus of life at this important end of the harbour.

4. Newtown and The Ginns
The main aim here is to create a higher quality southern approach to the town centre. Vacant or underused sites provide an opportunity for larger scale halls of residence or serviced accommodation for research students or employees at the Westlakes Science Park. At the Ginns, a large supermarket site will be combined with residential buildings along the road frontages.
